First Global Festival of the Arts, Science and Technology to take place in Sophia Antipolis Cote d'Azur 06-10 June 2006
Nice - Sophia Antipolis 24 May 2006: The Festival of the Fourth Dimension, the first global festival of the Art, Science and Technology will take place in Sophia Antipolis Côte d'Azur, 06-10 June 2006. The five-day festival will gather artist, philosopher, scientist, and high-tech communities from around the world to celebrate their vision of a creation beyond tradition. Concerts, conferences, exhibitions, film projections and other happenings will take place in Nice, on the Valrose University campus and in Sophia Antipolis, creating a dialogue between art, technology and science. Light, sound, perfume will be revisited by high-tech achievements and lead to a new perception of our environment. The Festival will take place in association with the 06-06-06 celebration of the department. " At the center of the manifestations, be they cultural or scientific, performances or exhibits, live or remote, interactive or passive, will be the creativity, inspiration, and innovation of the individual artist, researcher, philosopher, scientist," commented Derrick de Kerckhove, Artistic Director of the Festival. " We have chosen Sophia Antipolis Côte d'Azur for this festival because of the immense reservoir of creativity resident in the region, be it on the artistic, research, high-tech or philosophical side," added de Kerckhove, who is also holder of the prestigious Papamarkou Chair in Technology and Education at the Library of Congress, Director of the McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology of the University of Toronto.
As a multimedia and interactive event, this symphony of the 21st century represents a true challenge for information technology. Using about one hundred computers linked in clusters and two core networks the "performance" will need the artistic and technologic input of the association Telecom Valley, the composers Frédéric Voisin and Robin Meier and is linked to the research project "Neuromuse" of CIRM (Centre National de Création Musicale), and Eurécom (Ecole d'ingénieurs en systèmes de communication) as well as the international hightech companies most of which are located on site (Alcatel Alénia Space, Cisco, EDF, France Telecom, Infineon, Orange, Philips, SAP, SUN), research instituts (INRIA) and new ventures (Antipolis Lab et Seemage). Other "World Premieres" to be taking place in Nice at the Valrose campus on 6 June : the scientific exploring of the forth dimension at the university of Nice-Sophia Antipolis through a film of Jean Vigo. "A propos de Nice" . The movie is "revised" by a space-time morphing software putting together pictures from the past, present and future on the same screen, the very idea of the forth dimension. more "World Premieres" : Music, avant-garde cinema, perfume "Dialtones telesymphony", multimedia opera …. In addition to the "World Premieres ", the program of the festival includes pioneer works by Iannis Xenakis, introduced by his daughter Mathi Xénakis, life cinema sessions or "Cinéma des Origines" organized by Mission Cinéma. Further multimedia performances include "Un Monde en Senteurs", interactive events as "WiFi Art-In,", the "Dialtones telesymphony "by Golan Levin, etc, and will allow people all over the world to take part either in person or via the Internet. A new broadband network for art and innovation. A broadband network in Sophia an the campus of University Nice-Sophia Antipolis was specially designed for the festival and will link all events together as well as to the Internet, the cell phone network and satellite television. The network will remain available to composers, artists, movie makers to create artwork and promote innovation within companies. Comments "Sophia Antipolis has been the first technology park in Europe and the first in the world to have included culture, philosophy, and science from the start more than 35 years ago," said Senator Pierre Laffitte, founder of Sophia Antipolis, President of the Fondation Sophia Antipolis and partner of the festival. "The high-tech companies, research and education institutes and the start-ups all supporting and participating in the festival demonstrate the importance they place on creativity and innovation for their continued excellence in the 21st century", concluded Laffitte. "The Opening of the Festival of the forth dimension at University Nice Sophia Antipolis has the purpose to lay down the scientific foundations of this non intuitive dimension for a common thinking also linking art, culture and digital technology. The date chose for the opening is the 6 June 2006 at 6 .00 p.m., in the middle of the festivities for the Departement Alpes-Maritimes also underlines the willingness of the University Nice Sophia Antipolis to take its place next to partners in the communication technology field and provide excellence in the scientific and cultural field."
